12 YEARS Living Off-Grid on a Sustainable Homestead in a Self-Built Cob Home

12 YEARS Living Off-Grid on a Sustainable Homestead in a Self-Built Cob Home

Bryce and Misty have spent the last 12 years building a cob home, homesteading, living off the grid, and homeschooling their two daughters. They live without a car, so for transportation, they use taxis and bicycles, and they eventually hope to have a cart that their two horses can pull. For food production, they have a permaculture food forest for fruits and vegetables, chinampa-inspired wetland gardens, a cow and a bull for milk, ducks and chickens for eggs, bees for honey, and they also forage and cultivate feral crops. The house is built with clay that they collected from the wetland area of their property, their well was dug by hand, and everything from the fences to the staircase was made with wood from within a 20km radius of their home. The cost to build the house was approximately $1,000 CAD. Most of the building materials (the sand, clay, straw, and wood) came from the land, and things like roofing, lumber, and windows they sourced from secondhand and reclaimed sources. Interestingly, they used several different natural building techniques in the home with each new addition. They usually start with a timber frame, and they have used cob, straw bales and wattle and daub, to fill in the spaces between the beams. And they've also explored using green roofs and earth floors. Since moving to the land, they had two lovely daughters that they homeschool using unschooling and life immersion methods. They learn about food production, natural building, nature, math, reading, and more! To earn an income, they do a variety of odd jobs including catering, seasonal farm work, a roadside plant stand, and they also receive the childcare benefit that all families in their province receive. Their primary focus is not how to earn more money but rather how to spend less and have more time. They try to produce as much of what they need on the farm. For electricity, they have solar panels on the roof and a wind turbine (currently non-operational), for water they have a hand-dug well and rainwater collection barrels, for heat they have wood stoves, they have two composting toilets, and a rocket stove to heat water for their bathtub. Off-The-Grid Tiny House & Stunning Syntropic Food Forest Gardens

In this weeks episode, we venture to the beautiful sub-tropical Northern Rivers region of New South Wales to visit a spectacular off-the-grid tiny house on wheels, situated amongst stunning syntropic, regenerative, food forest gardens. For anyone who has dreamed of going off-the-grid and escaping to paradise to grow food and live simply, this is a video tour you will want to check out! This amazing tiny house is situated amongst wonderful syntropic gardens. Similar in many ways to permaculture syntropic farming is a form of dynamic regenerative agricultural forestry which uses a systems thinking approach to create an abundant, healthy, natural food forest. Focus is placed on formation of healthy soil biology and establishing microclimates so that food production and agriculture is synchronised with regeneration of the land. Super cool stuff! Equally as impressive as the gardens is the amazing off-the-grid tiny house on wheels. The home is solar powered with abundant rain water collection. A composting toilet helps to reduce the homes water consumption. Beautifully designed, there is abundant outdoor living space so that Anthony and Kirra can enjoy year round indoor / outdoor living. I hope you enjoy the full video tour of this incredible tiny home! Woman's Magical Cob House Built with Earth & Reclaimed Materials

This is a full tour of a cozy cob micro cabin built by Marie France Roy, a professional snowboarder from Canada. She wanted to build a home with natural and reclaimed materials so the main floor is built with cob – a mix of sand, clay, and straw – and the upper floor is built with reclaimed cedar siding. She also used secondhand windows and other materials that were used or on their way to the landfill to reduce the impact of her project. For heat, she uses a sealed woodstove and has backup electric heat if she's leaving the house for an extended period of time. For water and waste, she's hooked up to a well and septic. She is currently using propane for her stove and hot water heater but has bought and activated a system to produce and collect methane using food waste. She hopes to eventually transition to using homemade gas instead of propane. The tiny cob house is plugged onto the grid but she also has a small solar panel array to feed renewable energy onto the grid. Co-Mover à Transição

Marina Martins Carias e Victor Kazuo Teramoto

Jaya Mantras - Inkiri Piracanga
